Ukraine:

H1N1 to cause more deaths in northern winter - WHO

* No evidence of virus mutation, vaccines still effective

* Pandemic vaccines seen as "very safe" after millions given

* WHO has yet to receive 200 mln vaccine doses for poorest

GENEVA, Nov 5 (Reuters) - The H1N1 swine flu virus has picked up steam in the northern hemisphere and is expected to cause more serious infections and deaths as cold weather sets in, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday.

But the virus is not known to have mutated, including in people infected in a large outbreak in Ukraine, meaning that the current pandemic vaccines are expected to confer "good protection", it said in a statement.

Mexico is reporting more H1N1 cases than early in the pandemic, which began in April, and the United States shows higher levels of flu-like illness than in past years, top WHO flu expert Keiji Fukuda said. Swine flu is also on the rise in Europe and Central Asia.

Weekly update

As of 25 October 2009, worldwide there have been more than 440,000 laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 and over 5700 deaths reported to WHO.

As many countries have stopped counting individual cases, particularly of milder illness, the case count is likely to be significantly lower than the actual number of cases that have occurred. WHO is actively monitoring the progress of the pandemic through frequent consultations with the WHO Regional Offices and member states and through monitoring of multiple sources of data.

Situation update:

In the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, influenza transmission continues to intensify marking an unusually early start to winter influenza season in some countries. In North America, the US, and parts of Western Canada continue to report high rates of influenza-like-illness (ILI) and numbers of pandemic H1N1 2009 virus detections; Mexico has reported more confirmed cases since September than during the springtime epidemic. In Western Europe, high rates of ILI and proportions of respiratory specimens testing positive for pandemic H1N1 2009 have been observed in at least five countries: Iceland, Ireland, the UK (N. Ireland), Belgium, and the Netherlands. Many other countries in Europe and Western and Central Asia are showing evidence of early influenza transmission, including in Spain, Austria, parts of Northern Europe, Russia, and Turkey. In Japan, influenza activity has also increased sharply, especially on the northern island, approximately 10 weeks ahead the usual start of the winter influenza season.

Pandemic influenza transmission remains active in many parts of the tropical zone of the Americas, most notably in several Caribbean countries. Overall transmission continues to decline in most but not all parts of the tropical zone of South and Southeast Asia

Little influenza activity has been reported in temperate region of the southern hemisphere since the last update.

OK this is a Blog so I am going to post the more "out there" stuff -- because everything has some element of truth or useful information, but keep your filters on! Here is where a lot of the Anxiety was probably coming from (this did actually happen): Pneumonic plague blockade lifted off Ziketan And : Marmot at source of China plague: WHO (AFP) – Aug 11, 2009 GENEVA — A marmot was at the root of a pneumonic plague outbreak in northwest China that has claimed three lives, the World Health Organisation said Tuesday. "According to the epidemiological investigation, the source of this outbreak was a wild marmot," which later came into contact with a dog, said the UN health agency in a statement. On August 1, China reported an outbreak of pulmonary plague in Ziketan, a remote town in a Tibetan area of Qinghai province, the WHO said. A 32-year-old herdsman was the first person to die from the outbreak. His 64-year-old father-in-law and a 37-year-old male neighbour have also died from the disease. The WHO said the three deaths have been "attributed largely to delayed treatment."

Certainly the star of this outbreak has been the Ukarian PM Yulia Tymoshenko. Born in 1960 the, what I would call stunning lawmaker has been extremely visible and active in this crisis. She is very controversial and probably does not engage in business we would deem kosher in the west. It is something like the Sarah Palin phenomena except, of course, Tymoshenko is very intelligent, probably close to brilliant even.

Not really good news in the update. Regular H1N1 is bad, way worse that the common cold they made it out to be. Any of us that felt like we had it could tell you that. Rich that just pisses me off to no end. Wall St. Before Main St. for H1N1 Vaccine? AFTER WHAT THEY HAVE DONE, EVERY PERSON IN THE THIRD WORLD SHOULD BE VACCINATED BEFORE ANY OF THEM. Then only after US pets have gotten a round.
